In Gratitude
I would like to thank everyone, from my heart, who have helped, encouraged, mentored or supported me to have this life in the arts. And, I wish to thank the universe for conspiring to make me an artist.
On being an artist I would say its a huge privilege, yet as lowly in it’s actual processes as water. I get asked what does it take to become an artist? In one word, LOVE. You must love with such conviction you achieve non-attachment to outcome. That is the way of life itself, is the reward. Love is a playful, & positive energy and is what is required to be truly creative. It sits at the centre of the universe, with the push for life itself.
The evolution of art is pointless except to itself for itself. But that’s life … it’s own self contained push for existence…. Life, love, are not possessions. Creativity is not a possession. They are forces of nature, which have the power to call into being, themselves. It is here that one has a chance of becoming.
There are the practical elements… the skills. Time is spent, resources deployed, Focus bought to bear, skills honed over one’s life realised and the gift is called into service. Energy is transferred, and a work of art created. And by the way it’s not your business as the artist if that art be deemed good or not-good. Is well received or not well received. For you as the artist, a day spent in service to the flow of art, is the reward. What the world does with it after that, with its capriciousness, random cruelty and indignities - cannot be allowed to trap ones attention. Including the trap of success itself.
I feel privileged each day I spend creating, because it is not every day. And one day there will be no more days for me. And it happens in amongst the dishes and the cooking and the mending and such life’s trials and distractions.
If I painted, I feel I have had the chance to honour the dead stars in my heart, the plant cell respired oxygen in my lungs, the energy that emanates from me.
The love I feel has meaning then - an expression, a home. And the first, the very first thing I get to create as an artist is a life in the arts, is to script my own story, then live it, and when it’s the truth, I become, my own identity. This freedom can be felt and encourages others to be free. The artworks left behind echoing love, freedom and I am so grateful.
Thank you.
